Project Notes Notebook (Free Printable and Tutorial!)

If you’re like me, you scribble notes about your project on whatever is nearby. A receipt, on the back of junk mail, etc. That’s why I love this little notebook! It’s so easy to make, and full of graph paper, which is perfect for figuring out the specifics of your next quilt (and keeping them all in one place)!

In less than an hour you can make one of your own. And the best part is, you probably already have everything you need.

What you’ll need for one notebook:

1 sheet of 8.5 x 11 cardstock in your favorite color
5 sheets of 8.5 x 11 printer paper or graph paper
About 3 feet of book binding string (or embroidery floss will work fine, too!)
Sewing needle
Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat
And this file, printed onto the sheet of cardstock

Step 1: Print the free .pdf onto your cardstock. Use your ruler to measure 5.5″ and cut the paper in half. Fold in half as shown in this picture. Now you have two covers. Hopefully you’ll love the first one enough to make another for a friend!

Step 2: Open the cover and starting 1/2 inch from the top, make a mark every quarter inch along the spine ending 1/2 an inch before the bottom as well. Poke a hole with the sewing needle on each mark.

Step 3: Then cut and fold the graph paper just like you did the cardstock.

Step 4: Using the cover as a template, poke holes in the inside paper, a few sheets at a time.

Step 5: Once your paper is all folded and punched, it’s time to start sewing. Start on the top hole, and draw your thread through the cardstock and all five sheets of inside paper. Sew back to the outside.

Step 6: Double knot the string and clip the end.

Step 7: Go back down the second hole. Once you are inside the book again, come back up the third hole and loop under the thread between the first and second hole. Then go down the third hole again. Repeat down the entire spine.

Step 8: Once you get to the end, come out the last hole, loop through the previous threads one more time and tie it of with a double knot. Trim the ends of the thread.

This is what the inside and outside will look like:

Step 9: Using your rotary cutter and ruler, trim the edges of your book so they are uniform.

You’re all done! Wouldn’t these make such a great gift with a charm pack or two? Enjoy!

Tutorial for a Pirate Quilt! Ahoy-Matey’s

Arrgh! Mom’s done it again. Stole the pattern right out of me head!

So do you or someone you love have a thing for Pirates!!?!?  If so, you have probably been looking EVERYWHERE for some adorable Pirate fabric, only to come up short.  I know, because I have been searching everywhere!  Well, Ladies and Gentlemen…It is here!  Riley Blake has done it for us!  With help of course from the amazing designer, Emily Taylor! {her blog here, go and tell her we said hi}

I know that the picture I posted might scare you, but have no fear.  Our shop has not been taken over by mean pirates.  No money grubbers and thievery going on, It’s just crazy Jenny dressing up for the occasion!  (once a costumer always a costumer.  Or is it, once a fun Mom always a fun one?  I think both of those fit her)

Anyway here is the quilt {without any distraction}

Just darling, right!?

If you want-need-just have to make one yourself, here is how you do it!

You will need:

3/4 yards of Black fabric {we used Bella solid Black 9900-99}  for inner border and binding

1 yard of Map Fabric {main center panel}

1.5 yards of the Skull fabric

1 yard of the Blue Boat Fabric

1/2 yard of the Pirate word fabric

2-Charm packs

Directions:

Take the one yard of the {map fabric} and cut it down to 25″X 36″

Out of the leftover fabric, fussy cut 4- 5 inch square pieces

Then, with the Black fabric cut 4- 2inch strips and border the main fabric.

Take one charm pack and cut it in half. {2.5 inch rectangles} Sew together on the long side, making coin strips. Attach the coin strips to the quilt, using the fussy cut blocks in the corners.

For the zig-zag border cut 12 squares {of each fabric. Skulls and words} 6.5 inches X 6.5 inches

Then cut 24- 6.5 inch squares out of the Blue Boat fabric.

TO make the half square triangles, pair the skull and black fabric with a blue boat fabric.   Sew all around each square {like we do the pinwheels} matching up the squares and cutting them both ways diagonally, to make half square triangles.

{pinwheel tutorial here}

Put them together, alternating to make the zig-zag design for the border.  {refer back to the picture if needed}

Now, you are almost done!!  For the last border {the outer border} cut 8- 4.5 inch strips of the Skull fabric and attach to quilt!

And you are DONE!  Easy- peasy!  All you need now is some backing fabric!  {4 yds}

Finished Size: 59 X 67

Have a wonderful-happy-exciting day!

Here’s some cute shots of our display in the Shop!

Relay for Life…Why she is helping and how you can too.

Dawn is a dear friend/customer who has given marvelous advice and been a great help to us.  She is donating a quilt that is being raffled off for Relay for Life.   If you want a chance at a quilt that has hung on our walls and is absolutely GORGEOUS donate today!

A letter from Dawn, in her own words:

My Reason to Relay

I am participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life
because I want to make a meaningful difference in the fight against
cancer.  I have family, colleagues, former classmates, and friends
affected by cancer, with some winning and some losing this fight.   My
Team may just have one person listed, but it is also the heart and
souls of Valent field staff, my colleagues, friends and family~ as our
field of dreams should be endless!

We are making a difference by teaming up to participate in the
American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.  Saving lives from cancer
starts one team, one participant, and one dollar at a time.  It also
starts with one hope, just believing that there are cures to be found.

Valent USA has a home office in Walnut Creek, California, and has been
making quilts to raffle off as a fundraiser for Relay for Life.
This past year, one of our Valent Team quilters, Nancy Engman, lost
her battle to melanoma skin cancer, but we are continuing on with the
quilts.   My colleagues in California made a quilt called “All Around
the Neighborhood.”  I made some of the flowers in the quilt and I
decided to donate a quilt that I had designed and the MSQC quilted to
the cause!    See it at Missouri Star Quilt Company:

By joining or donating to our team, you will be a part of a
life-changing event that gives everyone in the community a chance to
celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved
ones lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. And
as a special bonus, every $10 in donation is a raffle ticket towards
winning one of these quilts!

Please support our efforts to fight cancer by making a donation. The
impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could
do alone!

Show and Tell

I’ve recieved several emails from Caroline and she has been a busy girl!  She has made some amazing quilts!  I am just blown away.  Today I am going to show you all the amazing work Miss Caroline has been doing!

First up is her ‘Strips and Stars’ quilt.   {She used this tutorial}  I just love the solid black background against the bright colors!

This next one she made for her Great Granddaughter (born June 10th) She used a Buttercup charm pack and this tutorial.

So sweet! Just perfect for a baby!

The next one is just a beautiful as the others!  She made the X’s and O’s Quilt that Mom taught in her online class with Sympoz, and used the fabric ‘Lovely” by Sandy Gervais for Moda.  I just LOVE the way it turned out.  One of the best lines this Spring for sure.  (in my opinion, of course. *wink*wink)

Last but certainly NOT least, she is working on a Dresden Plate quilt!  Like I said, Caroline has been a busy girl!

She used the Wild Flowers IV and it just looks stunning!

Caroline has certainly stolen the show {and tell} today!   Thanks for showing us your amazing handi-work Caroline.

I just love each of your sweet emails and appreciate you taking the time to send us your pictures!

FYI:  We had a Fed-X semi truck pull up to the Shop yesterday!  Oh my stars!  We have SO MUCH new stuff, we are busting with excitement!  So, just stay tuned!  We will be showing and talking and sharing with you all about it!

If you can’t wait one more minute for Hometown by Sweetwater, or Deb Strains new line ‘Meadow Friends, we have them in!  SO EXCITING!  {So much more.  And all the yardage too!}

Have the BEST Wednesday possible!  🙂

Talk to you soon!
