Elephant and Donkey Quilts

Pixel quilting is all the rage, but it’s really not a new technique. In 1931, the Kansas City Star published a mosaic elephant pattern as a tribute to a beloved elephant at the local zoo.

The next year, a companion quilt was released. This one featured a pixelated donkey named Giddap. Both are cute as can be, and so easy to put together!

Four Corners Quilt

Take a peek at a U.S. map, and you’ll notice that Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico are laid out like a giant four patch with perfectly nested seams and lovely 90-degree angles. The Four Corners Monument marks the spot where they all come together. It’s the only place in the country where you can stand in one spot and be in 4 states at once!

This week Jenny is working on a Four Corners quilt. Each block brings together 4 pretty corners with a cute little “monument” in the middle.

Star Crossed Quilt

Spoiler alert! Romeo and Juliet were doomed from the start. It’s right there in the 6th line of the play: “Warning! They’re totally gonna die. Everything ends in a giant ball of disaster.” (I’m paraphrasing, but you get the gist.) Those star-crossed lovers never had a chance!

Twist and Shout Quilt

I tell ya, when we were kids, we could twist and shout on the dance floor til dawn. But these days? Well,  twist and shout have taken on a whole new meaning.

I bend to retrieve a fallen straight pin. “Ouch!” I turn to empty a snow shovel. “Woah, Nelly!” Yes, with this old body of mine, a simple little twist sure can make me shout!

This week, stitch together a Twist and Shout quilt that’s so quick and easy,  you’ll feel like a kid again!

Candy Twist Quilt Tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

One hundred years ago, Halloween was more about tricks than treats. Instead of trekking door to door to collect candy, kids spent the evening pulling pranks on their neighbors. A little doorbell ditching here, a little property damage there. Frankly, I say bring on the sweets!
