There was a story featured in our July 12th Daily Deal email from Mary Beth (every Tuesday we share one of your stories… there are some really wonderful ones!). It was Mary Beth’s story that inspired our Motivational Monday printable for today, so click on the image above so you can print it for your sewing room! Here’s what Mary Beth said:

“Several years ago I was ill for an extended period of time. My life consisted pretty much of shuffling between the bed and the sofa. I had long hours of free time but no hope of being able to do what I most loved: making quilts. But those unfinished projects piled in my upstairs sewing room were never far from my mind and I yearned to bring them to life again. Then inspiration struck: the dining room!  I wasn’t going to be serving dinners in there anytime soon. My daughter and husband were most cooperative. They hauled down my sewing machine, cutting tools, ironing board, endless gadgets, as well as piles and bins of fabric and, of course, the unfinished projects.

“I could tolerate working about fifteen minutes at a stretch. I learned to iron sitting down. As I worked on  my various quilts in this way for more than a year, I found it to be liberating and life affirming. I had accomplished something by the end of each day. I once again felt the satisfaction and joy of a finished quilt project. My daughter was thrilled with the Bargello wall quilt I completed for her office. When my guild did a mystery quilt I was able to participate. I made charity quilts. I had something cheerful to mention when talking to friends and family and they got excited for me as well.

“This was not only therapy for me it was therapy shared. I was sewing again; surely all was right with our world. Eventually I grew stronger and moved back into my upstairs sewing room.  However, I no longer accumulate partially finished projects on my shelves. Everything started is a work in progress until finished and somehow that feels therapeutic too!”

Pictured below is Mary Beth’s daughter Katy and the Bargello quilt mentioned in the story.

Whatever you’re going through, we hope that quilting can offer you a little reprieve. Download the printable for a little extra reminder. It’s not just a hobby, it’s preventative medicine! 🙂

Happy Quilting!

This tutorial features the beautiful Uppercase 2.5″ Strips by Janine Vangool for Windham Fabrics. Aren’t they gorgeous? They’re so bright and happy that they give the perfect pop to this quilt! In fact, we love it so much that we’ve teamed up with Janine to do a little fabric feature and giveaway!

UPPERCASE-JanineVangoolStudio

The Uppercase Fabric line was inspired by Uppercase Magazine, which was founded by Janine Vangool and is operated by her and her family. The rich, saturated colors paired with neutrals brings this line full circle for any project that might need some happy, positive energy. Janine used small scale monocromatic prints in her designs to add depth to each color that can be used as a more dynamic alternative to solid color fabrics. If you can’t tell, we love it!

So, today we’re giving away a 1-year subscription to Uppercase Magazine (North American addresses only), 3 single copies of Uppercase Magazine (North American Addresses only), as well as a beautiful Uppercase Fabric Bundle! Find out the ways to enter below (All entry options are optional, but you have to choose at least one to enter!) That means there will be FIVE winners!!

Back to the 50’s Retreat Recap

MSQC Retreat Recap on the Blog!

Remember the purr of a 57’ Chevy? The taste of a ten-cent burger? The sweet sounds of the Everly Brothers? The 50’s were an unforgettable era full of great fashion and style we love! We especially love those 50’s inspired quilts and that’s we hosted not just one but two fun filled Back to the 50’s Retreats! Check out all the happenings from both below. 🙂

back to 50s

At the Back to the 50’s Retreats we went all out wearing poodles skirts, letter sweaters, bobbie socks and our boyfriend’s class rings! To really set the tone, there was 50’s music playing in the background the entire time (you know, the good stuff you can’t find on the radio today).

poodle skirtsA real blast from the past came when we had “Do the Twist” dance-offs and hula hooping! Oh yeah, us quilter’s can still shake it! 😉 Memories were brought up as we discussed phrases from the 50’s as well. We even burned some rubber on the sewing machine pedals!

IMG_8282Check out this darling traveling chest covered in 50’s style! It’s got that vintage beauty!

Isn’t this retro 3D Pinwheel that Karen Hartley made so fun?? She brought this as her own pattern to work on at the retreat and by the time it was over she taught almost everyone in attendance how to make it. We love when quilters come together and share their wisdom to inspire others!

Take a look at this fun wall hanging that one of the retreaters made specially for the retreat! How cute is that??

Of course, one of the best parts about retreats is show and tell with everyone who is there. We love seeing everyone’s quilt designs, fabric choices and progress!

Sew With Jenny 2016 Retreat Recap

MSQC Retreat Recap on the Blog!

IMG_9253

This past May we hosted our first ever “Sew With Jenny” retreat here at Missouri Star Quilt Company and boy was it a hit! Jenny brought her sewing machine to the retreat center and had a blast sewing along and chatting with everyone there!

IMG_9235

Jenny did her famous Trunk Show for the group (if you’ve never seen it, check our schedule for an upcoming one HERE). It was 2 hours of personal stories about Jenny and MSQC, laughter, tears and tips for quilting with precuts! Jenny also taught a few classes, including the Flying Geese Log Cabin and Pinwheel Party Quilts! Isn’t the Flying Geese Log Cabin Table Runner above gorgeous??

IMG_9244

Jan made her Flying Geese Log Cabin in a darker colorway of batiks and it turned out great! It’s so fun to see how different a quilt can look by using different colors, each as beautiful as the next in its own way.

Bonnie’s husband surprised her with this retreat and even sent her roses from the local flower shop. How sweet is that?? He deserves an award!

Denise got a head start on Christmas projects while at the retreat and made a darling Love Notes Star Quilt. Imagine wrapping up in it next to the fireplace with some hot coco. So peaceful!
