New Friday Tutorial: The Sashed Tumbler Quilt

During the 17th century, a tumbler was a round-bottomed drinking cup. Now, I’m no cup expert, but that seems like an awfully inefficient design. I mean, what if poor Willoughby needed to set down his drink to grab a second serving of ox tongue soup? Would not his cup of ale tumble over and stain his beautiful new breeches? Thank goodness for the genius who invented flat-bottomed tumblers!

Today’s new tutorial, The Sashed Tumbler Quilt, is a beautiful tumbler design (flat-bottomed, of course.) It’s quick and easy, and a simple strip of sashing takes these blocks from “meh” to “wowowow!!!”

New Friday Tutorial: The Sparkle Quilt

We live in a culture obsessed with youth. Everywhere I look I’m bombarded with advertisements to plump this, tuck that, camouflage, conceal, and reverse all signs of aging. But I’ve got a secret. Sometimes getting older is awesome. Super awesome.

I still remember the moment I discovered my first gray hair. I had been dreading that day my entire adult life, but as I stared at that colorless strand, I noticed how it sparkled in the sunlight. I kid you not, my hair was sparkling like a magical fairy princess! Sparkling!

New Friday Tutorial: The Spring Rain Quilt

I love a little shower of rain. It’s just so peaceful to sit at my sewing machine and listen to the gentle pitter-pat of raindrops on the window. It’s too wet to work in the yard, too wet to run to the grocery story, and way too wet to cut the grass. I’ve racked my brain and come to the conclusion that on a rainy day, the best use of my time is quilting! (Curiously, I’ve come to the same conclusion about sunny days, snowy days, and even plagues-of-locust days.)

New Friday Tutorial: The Four Patch Lattice Quilt

Years ago, I made a birthday cake for a new neighbor from Cuba. Laura was unfamiliar with boxed cake mix, so when she saw those two mouth-watering layers of chocolatey goodness, she was certain I had spent hours in the kitchen. It just didn’t seem possible that such a decadent dessert could be whipped together in less than 5 minutes! We live in a magical time, my friends, where fabulous cakes – and quilts – can be created with amazing speed and ease!

In the quilting world, it just doesn’t get easier than a four patch made of charms. But add a simple slice of black, and you’ve got the makings of a gorgeously intricate Four Patch Lattice! It’s so easy, and yet it looks like a million bucks (our favorite combination)!
