This past May we hosted our first ever “Sew With Jenny” retreat here at Missouri Star Quilt Company and boy was it a hit! Jenny brought her sewing machine to the retreat center and had a blast sewing along and chatting with everyone there!
Jenny did her famous Trunk Show for the group (if you’ve never seen it, check our schedule for an upcoming one HERE). It was 2 hours of personal stories about Jenny and MSQC, laughter, tears and tips for quilting with precuts! Jenny also taught a few classes, including the Flying Geese Log Cabin and Pinwheel Party Quilts! Isn’t the Flying Geese Log Cabin Table Runner above gorgeous??
Jan made her Flying Geese Log Cabin in a darker colorway of batiks and it turned out great! It’s so fun to see how different a quilt can look by using different colors, each as beautiful as the next in its own way.
Bonnie’s husband surprised her with this retreat and even sent her roses from the local flower shop. How sweet is that?? He deserves an award!
Denise got a head start on Christmas projects while at the retreat and made a darling Love Notes Star Quilt. Imagine wrapping up in it next to the fireplace with some hot coco. So peaceful!
How cute are those I Heart Jenny shirts?? This retreat was so much fun and we can’t wait to do it again in the future. If you would like to attend an upcoming retreat, be sure to visit Missouri Star Quilt Company Retreats & Events!
In a starburst galaxy, stars form at an amazing pace. Unlike more common (aka: humdrum, lazy, and unremarkable) galaxies, starburst galaxies are pretty much super achievers, producing star after star after glorious, twinkling star. This week’s tutorial, The Starburst Quilt, will have you creating blocks so quickly, you’ll feel like a starburst galaxy yourself. This quilt is classically eye catching and oh, so easy! Here are the details:

During the 17th century, a tumbler was a round-bottomed drinking cup. Now, I’m no cup expert, but that seems like an awfully inefficient design. I mean, what if poor Willoughby needed to set down his drink to grab a second serving of ox tongue soup? Would not his cup of ale tumble over and stain his beautiful new breeches? Thank goodness for the genius who invented flat-bottomed tumblers!
Today’s new tutorial, The Sashed Tumbler Quilt, is a beautiful tumbler design (flat-bottomed, of course.) It’s quick and easy, and a simple strip of sashing takes these blocks from “meh” to “wowowow!!!”

On the first Monday of every month, we invite a guest quilter to come and join us on our blog to try out one of Jenny’s tried and true tutorials and of course, put their own little spin on it! Whether it’s the fabrics they use or a new tip, we’re always excited to see how it turns out! For June’s Tutorial Reboot, we welcome Heather Valentine of The Sewing Loft to join us! We hope you enjoy her take on the Double Slice Quilt! #tutorialreboot
Hello Missouri Star Quilt Peeps! I’m Heather from The Sewing Loft.
On the average day I’m in one of two places; I’m either behind my machine or behind my keyboard. When I’m not stitching up a storm, I’m sharing sewing tips and tricks on my blog. One of my latest passions is using up every last scrap. That’s right, I’m a scrapaholic.
I think that’s why I love Jenny’s Double Slice Layer Cake tutorial so much. With just a few quick passes of the rotary cutter you are well on your way to creating a random scrappy pattern.
Cuddle is a specialty fabric that is knit based and has a directional pile. Normally, I would pay close attention to the direction of the pile but since I knew each block would be turned in all different ways, I didn’t sweat it. Instead, I just jumped right in and decided it would be a fun textural factor on the final quilt.
After watching the video you can see that from start to finish this is going to be fun. Thank goodness the cutting went super fast because with each pass of my rotary cutter I began to get more and more excited.
The bursts of color were like a visual rush of sugary eye candy. Seriously, I could hardly wait to get stitching on this one. Just look at all those yummy colors stacked together.
When it comes to matching fabrics, this double slice technique really takes the pressure off! Just grab your favorite layer cake, rotary cutter and get set to slice and go. You can see that I layered the cuddle squares into my fabric stack. Then it was all about the chain piecing. With each stitch I could see this was gonna be good.
The quilt top really comes together in a flash and is the perfect weekend project.
I pretty much love everything about this quilt but the random placement of colors and patterns makes my scrapaholic heart sing.
Here are a few additional fav’s for me:
Super fast cutting (who wants to spend time cutting when we all just want to sew!)
NO pins!! This is big for me because I like to just put the pedal to the metal.
Scrappy outlook.
Touch-ablity factor! All I want to do now is veg out on the couch and pet it!!
P.S. Don’t forget to label your work! This is so much easier than you think.
We live in a culture obsessed with youth. Everywhere I look I’m bombarded with advertisements to plump this, tuck that, camouflage, conceal, and reverse all signs of aging. But I’ve got a secret. Sometimes getting older is awesome. Super awesome.
I still remember the moment I discovered my first gray hair. I had been dreading that day my entire adult life, but as I stared at that colorless strand, I noticed how it sparkled in the sunlight. I kid you not, my hair was sparkling like a magical fairy princess! Sparkling!
I’ve yet to meet a person who doesn’t enjoy a good sparkle, and whether or not you’re a fan of silver hair, I know you’re going to fall head over heels for today’s new tutorial, the Sparkle Quilt! Here’s what you need to make this beautiful quilt!
