2016 Christmas in July Retreat Recap

MSQC Retreat Recap on the Blog!

Merry Christmas (in July) from Santa and Mrs. Claus at Missouri Star Quilt Company! July is the perfect time of the year for quilters to start preparing for holiday gift giving. It makes us feel like we’re ahead of the game for a while, and then by the time Christmas rolls around we’ll be scrambling to finish up a few less quilts on Christmas Eve. 😉

Show and tell time at retreats is one of our favorites. It’s always fun to see what others have been working on, what fabrics they’ve chosen and how one pattern can have look so different when made in various fabric lines. Isn’t this blue, yellow and white Dresden Flower Quilt darling??

Michele Schneider made the same Dresden Flower pattern using Christmas fabrics and it turned out so cute as well!

Patrcia Jackson made her Dresden Flower Quilt in blue and white snowflake fabric for a fun quilt that will be great to cuddle up in all winter!

Jackie Smith from TX

Jackie Smith worked on this Jelly Roll Race Quilt that’s going to be a Christmas gift for her grandson. He’s going to love it! She used two Jelly Rolls and doubled the size of the quilt. Find out how you can do that same HERE.

Shannon Cuddle Retreat Recap // May 2016

When my brother was a baby, he was obsessed with a particular fluffy blanket; he reminded me so much of Linus from Peanuts, the way he would carry it around with him. It was just a little bit of worn-out polyester fluff by the time he was grown, which was proof of how much it was loved.

Turns out, he wasn’t the only baby who loved soft, fluffy things – many quilting mothers and grandmothers can attest to this, along with the wealth of baby blanket patterns out there. One of our favorites is the Self Binding Baby Blanket, especially when made with Shannon Cuddle. It’s just so soft and comfy that even adults want one!

self binding cuddle thumbnailWhile it’s wonderful to whip up one of these fast baby blankets on your own, one of the best ways to do it is along with like-minded people! The Sewing Center became a softer place last week when MSQC played host to the Shannon Company for their first ever Cuddle Retreat. Prior to the retreat Shannon held all days classes for the MSQC employees.  We had thirty employees who came to the center to make strip quilts for the little ones in their lives. As you can see, we have some eager students among our ranks! Just look at those attentive faces!

Someone who definitely loved the Cuddle workshop was Shelby McCoy, one of the wonderful employees who works in our shops.

She had a blast working with Cuddle and making a sweet blanket for her little boy. Just look at how excited he is about his new blankie!

The following day the thirty plus women who came to retreat enjoyed learning about the Cuddle product and it’s use in the quilting world.  Mary Gay Leahy was an excellent teacher that Shannon sent to teach and instruct our attendees. These thirty women made a variety of cuddle quilts which they displayed during Show and Tell at the end of their four day retreat.

Mary Gay taught “pop up” demonstrations in Penny’s Quilt Shop through her time on campus.  A surprising amount of women chose to try the Cuddle products for the first time and their results were inspiring.

Dana Hood

Dana Hood made this stunning Rising Star Quilt while at the retreat. Don’t you love the way the stars pop off of the black background? Watch the Rising Star Quilt Tutorial HERE.

Cindy

Cindy got a head start on Christmas and made this cute wall hanging! Wouldn’t it look great hanging outside of a glamper??

Sometimes you make an exception to the rules. Especially when Rob Appell of Man Sewing is in Hamilton filming a new round of tutorials and he wants to stop by the retreat! Everyone had a great time visiting with Rob and getting their pictures taken with him! Check out Rob’s Quilting Tutorials HERE.

Meg and Teagon

Meg and Teagan (some of our MSQC staff at the Sewing Center) had a blast dressing up for the Sew Glamperous Retreat and providing some entertainment for the retreaters!

Back to the 50’s Retreat Recap

MSQC Retreat Recap on the Blog!

Remember the purr of a 57’ Chevy? The taste of a ten-cent burger? The sweet sounds of the Everly Brothers? The 50’s were an unforgettable era full of great fashion and style we love! We especially love those 50’s inspired quilts and that’s we hosted not just one but two fun filled Back to the 50’s Retreats! Check out all the happenings from both below. 🙂

back to 50s

At the Back to the 50’s Retreats we went all out wearing poodles skirts, letter sweaters, bobbie socks and our boyfriend’s class rings! To really set the tone, there was 50’s music playing in the background the entire time (you know, the good stuff you can’t find on the radio today).

poodle skirtsA real blast from the past came when we had “Do the Twist” dance-offs and hula hooping! Oh yeah, us quilter’s can still shake it! 😉 Memories were brought up as we discussed phrases from the 50’s as well. We even burned some rubber on the sewing machine pedals!

IMG_8282Check out this darling traveling chest covered in 50’s style! It’s got that vintage beauty!

IMG_8677

Isn’t this retro 3D Pinwheel that Karen Hartley made so fun?? She brought this as her own pattern to work on at the retreat and by the time it was over she taught almost everyone in attendance how to make it. We love when quilters come together and share their wisdom to inspire others!

IMG_8072 2

Take a look at this fun wall hanging that one of the retreaters made specially for the retreat! How cute is that??

Of course, one of the best parts about retreats is show and tell with everyone who is there. We love seeing everyone’s quilt designs, fabric choices and progress!

Sew With Jenny 2016 Retreat Recap

MSQC Retreat Recap on the Blog!

IMG_9253

This past May we hosted our first ever “Sew With Jenny” retreat here at Missouri Star Quilt Company and boy was it a hit! Jenny brought her sewing machine to the retreat center and had a blast sewing along and chatting with everyone there!

IMG_9235

Jenny did her famous Trunk Show for the group (if you’ve never seen it, check our schedule for an upcoming one HERE). It was 2 hours of personal stories about Jenny and MSQC, laughter, tears and tips for quilting with precuts! Jenny also taught a few classes, including the Flying Geese Log Cabin and Pinwheel Party Quilts! Isn’t the Flying Geese Log Cabin Table Runner above gorgeous??

IMG_9244

Jan made her Flying Geese Log Cabin in a darker colorway of batiks and it turned out great! It’s so fun to see how different a quilt can look by using different colors, each as beautiful as the next in its own way.

Bonnie’s husband surprised her with this retreat and even sent her roses from the local flower shop. How sweet is that?? He deserves an award!

Denise got a head start on Christmas projects while at the retreat and made a darling Love Notes Star Quilt. Imagine wrapping up in it next to the fireplace with some hot coco. So peaceful!
